Your resume is your best first impression. Students can begin creating or updating a resume to prepare for applying to summer internships. Prior work experience is not required. Highlight your experience and leadership qualities by including school activities, volunteer work, clubs, athletics, leadership roles, or special school projects.

Start thinking about experiences that demonstrate responsibility, teamwork, problem-solving, or initiative that you may want to reference in an interview. Classes, extracurricular activities, community involvement, and personal projects are all appropriate to highlight.

Experiences to think about:

  1. A time you solved a problem

  2. A time you worked on a team

  3. A time you learned from a mistake

  4. Something you’re proud of accomplishing

Practicing your interview skills can help build confidence. Consider practicing your response to common interview questions in the mirror or with a friend. Think about how you want to communicate your career interests and goals. Practice professional communication skills, like your elevator pitch.
