The Office of Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Toyota Motor Corporation announced a $3.6 billion investment that will create 2,000 new jobs, add 2.5 million square feet of manufacturing space, and double Toyota's San Antonio manufacturing footprint by 2030. The investment represents one of the most significant advanced manufacturing expansions in the region's history and further strengthens San Antonio's position as a competitive location for large-scale manufacturing growth.
The project will support a second vehicle assembly line and expand production capacity at Toyota's San Antonio manufacturing facility, including production of the Toyota Tacoma. The expansion will allow Tacoma assembly alongside the Tundra, Sequoia and rear axle production already taking place at Toyota Texas.
"This marks a transformational expansion for Toyota in San Antonio. With a second vehicle assembly line, Toyota will continue to grow quality jobs with tremendous career progression opportunities for our San Antonio region," said Sarah Carabias Rush, president and CEO of greater:SATX Regional Economic Partnership. "This win reflects the competitive strength of our skilled workforce, our leadership in automotive manufacturing innovation and the seamless collaboration among the State of Texas, Bexar County, the City of San Antonio and our utility and infrastructure partners to secure this opportunity."
greater:SATX worked alongside Toyota and regional partners throughout the process, helping align stakeholders and support the region as the company evaluated its long-term plans.
Partners involved in supporting the project included the State of Texas, Bexar County, the City of San Antonio, CPS Energy, SAWS, TxDOT, Southwest ISD, Toyota, greater:SATX and numerous regional stakeholders. Together, those partners helped ensure Toyota had access to the workforce, infrastructure and business environment needed to support future growth.
Toyota originally selected San Antonio for its truck manufacturing operations in 2003 and has since helped establish the region as one of North America's leading automotive manufacturing hubs. With this latest announcement, Toyota's total investment in San Antonio will reach approximately $8.3 billion.
"We are so proud of Team Texas and what they have accomplished," said Frank Voss, group vice president of truck manufacturing for Toyota Motor North America and president of Toyota Texas. "The 2,000 acres of South Texas ranchland our plant stands on today was purposefully selected for its ability to scale with vehicle demand, and today marks the first step toward realizing that potential."
Toyota currently employs more than 3,700 people in San Antonio and has grown into one of the region's largest manufacturing employers and a key driver of South Texas' automotive industry.
Toyota's impact extends far beyond its direct workforce. According to greater:SATX IMPLAN estimates, with the addition of 2,000 new jobs, Toyota's footprint could support more than 30,000 jobs across the region. For every Toyota job in San Antonio, approximately four additional jobs are supported through suppliers, contractors, service providers and other businesses.
The announcement is the result of years of work by Toyota and regional partners to align workforce, infrastructure, utility, transportation and economic development resources. The effort involved coordination among economic development, utility, transportation, workforce and education partners working alongside Toyota to support the company's long-term expansion plans.
As construction moves forward, the investment will create new opportunities for workers, suppliers and businesses throughout the region while expanding one of Toyota's most important manufacturing operations in North America. The project strengthens a major driver of the regional economy and positions San Antonio for continued growth in the years ahead.
