President POV

There is power in partnership—and nowhere is that more evident than across the I-35 corridor, home to the rapidly emerging San Antonio–Austin megaregion. Together with Opportunity Austin, the New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation, and the Hays Caldwell Economic Development Partnership, we are proudly aligning to unlock the full potential of this shared region.

That spirit of collaboration was on full display at our recent San Antonio–Austin Megaregion Investor Meeting. Leaders from across Central and South Texas gathered around a shared vision: to build one of the most dynamic economic regions in North America—and the world.

We brought together experts in workforce development and site selection to explore both the barriers and the opportunities that lie ahead. Former San Antonio Mayor and U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros delivered a compelling keynote, outlining the megaregion’s immense potential and challenging us to take bold, coordinated action in the areas of transportation, infrastructure, energy, housing, and workforce.

These are not just areas for investment—they are pillars of long-term prosperity.

A Unified Approach

The San Antonio–Austin megaregion is one of the fastest-growing corridors in the country—and that momentum is no accident. It’s the result of a strategic decision to collaborate rather than compete. By aligning across city and county lines, our communities are working together to attract job-producing investments and strengthen the region’s collective competitiveness.

As emphasized by the panel of site selectors, companies today aren’t just choosing cities—they’re choosing ecosystems. They’re drawn to regions with aligned talent pipelines, reliable infrastructure, regulatory consistency, and a high quality of life. The San Antonio–Austin corridor increasingly meets that standard, offering a connected ecosystem where assets are integrated rather than siloed.

That collaboration is producing measurable results. The megaregion is not only the fastest growing in population but also a leader in job creation. In 2024, San Antonio led Texas in job creation and ranked third nationally, while Austin was the state’s second-fastest-growing job market and placed among the top five in the U.S.

A Strategic Location. A Skilled Workforce. A Clear Advantage.

Our geography is one of our greatest strengths. Anchored along Interstate 35, the megaregion connects to the Port of Laredo—the busiest land port in the U.S.—and extends south to Monterrey, Mexico. This corridor is a critical hub for global trade, advanced manufacturing, logistics, and innovation.

Our regional workforce is more than 10 million strong, supported by a network of forward-thinking education institutions, including UTSA, Texas State, Texas A&M–San Antonio, Alamo Colleges, and Austin Community College. These institutions are directly aligning curriculum and degree programs with industry needs in cybersecurity, life sciences, business, and advanced manufacturing.

At the investor meeting, workforce development emerged as a top priority—from aligning curriculum with employer needs to expanding childcare access and accelerating training. Our commitment to inclusive growth means investing in the people who will power our region’s future.

Infrastructure and energy also remain central to our strategy, as well as housing. We’re scaling utility capacity to meet the demands of high-growth industries, and our municipally owned utilities are collaborating with local governments to enable faster, smarter development. With more attainable housing options than many peer metros, the megaregion offers both affordability and accessibility.

Competing Together, Winning Together

The most competitive regions in the world aren’t defined by city limits—they’re defined by collaboration. When we compete together, we win together. Our strength isn’t found in any one community, but in our shared commitment to lead, to innovate, and to drive lasting prosperity across the entire region.

The future belongs to regions that think big, act boldly, and move forward as one. We are that region.

Greater Together,

Jenna Saucedo-Herrera

Regional Highlight: New Braunfels

Located along the booming I-35 corridor between San Antonio and Austin, New Braunfels is at the heart of one of the fastest-growing megaregions in the country. This dynamic community combines a thriving economy, rich heritage, and exceptional quality of life—all while connecting the assets of two major metropolitan areas.

In this month’s Regional Highlight, we explore New Braunfels: where small-town charm meets the opportunities of a globally competitive megaregion.
