SATX 360: February 2022

President’s POV

What a way to start 2022!

Just last week, we announced that DeLorean has chosen San Antonio as its new global headquarters for its electric vehicle enterprise. The iconic automotive brand will create more than 450 jobs in executive, management, and engineering roles for San Antonians.

Target industry, high-wage jobs, headquarters – this project checks every box for our region. It checks those boxes because we’ve been building towards this year for some time. From the business community going All In on the region’s economic growth strategy, to our regional partners joining and strengthening our collective efforts, we’ve been building the roadway for SATX to blast into the future. DeLorean is just the start.

The San Antonio region has been attracting national attention in recent months, landing on several notable lists:

  • One of the Top Cities Leading the Nation in White-Collar Job Growth by Costar
  • One of the Top 10 Strongest Office Markets by NAR
  • One of the Top 5 Hottest Housing Markets by Zillow
  • One of the Top 5 Markets for Millennial Homebuyers by Knock

These lists show a growing wave of people outside of our market taking notice of what truly special things are happening in San Antonio.  Working together, we’ll continue building this momentum by investing in our greatest assets, our people, and our place. We are proud to be a minority-majority metro that looks today like how the rest of the nation will look in 2040. This is a competitive advantage when companies seek hiring diverse talent, and in how our community finds creative solutions to complex problems. Programs like SA: Ready to Work are building an even stronger talent pipeline for our employers here today and those in the future.

And when we talk about place, investments like Port San Antonio is making in building the upcoming state-of-the-art innovation facility, Tech Port Center + Arena, are game-changing. The 130,000-square-foot venue includes a collaborative lab space for prototyping new technologies; a technology museum and industry showroom to help connect locally-based innovations with potential buyers; and a 3,200-seat arena that can accommodate product launches, specialized trainings, conventions and other industry functions. DeLorean wants to be here where the action is. They chose to locate their headquarters at the Port to be part of what we’re building here.
